What is Malatang?
Yangguofu Malatang is a fantastic spot if you’re after something fresh, customisable, and a little bit different in the heart of Newcastle.
Malatang is a Chinese street food that lets you be the chef – well, kind of! You – literally – hand pick your ingredients and broth to create a totally unique dish every time.

You start by selecting your base – this could include protein (meats, seafood, or veggie options), vegetables, and noodles in any combination. Then, choose your broth or go for a dry mix if you fancy more of a stir fry. Your ingredients are then freshly cooked in your chosen broth, which makes every bowl one of a kind.

Why we enjoyed Yangguofu Malatang Newcastle
Pan Asian food and Malatang is my happy food, and Yangguofu Malatang Newcastle is now firmly on our list to revisit.
The restaurant is really cute and right in the centre of Newcastle. It feels modern and clean, with a very casual vibe. It is also super light when you walk in – we went on a rainy day, it was quite grey outside, but it was lovely and light inside the restaurant. We opted for a window seat and it was a great spot for people watching.

The staff were super friendly and helpful – ideal if it’s your first time trying Malatang as you may want to ask questions when you assemble your bowl.

Broth options at Yangguofu Malatang Newcastle
You can choose from three broth bases:
• Classic herbal beef bone broth
• Sweet & sour tomato flavour
• Grind pleasant spicy mix (a little bit like a stir fry rather than a broth)
We went for the sweet & sour and the spicy mix – both were delicious!

I thought the sweet and sour base was a perfect combination of those two flavours; I don’t usually like anything sweet when it comes to savoury dishes, but this was not at all too sweet, especially as I loaded it with the condiments from the condiment section; spring onions, spicy peppers, garlic paste, and loads and loads of coriander.
Our favourite ingredients and why the food stood out
I was also impressed with the choice of ingredients; there was a lot of lovely, fresh seafood – including my favourite king prawns and lobster balls.
They also do home made noodles, which I opted for, and they were super delicious.

I absolutely loved our creations. Everything was cooked perfectly, which can’t be an easy task when you mix noodles, seafood, and veggies. But the chefs here do an incredible job making sure even the trickiest of the seafood is cooked perfectly and isn’t chewy or rubbery. It was absolutely gorgeous!
Their slogan is ‘happiness is now’ and I couldn’t agree more.
It was a great little afternoon with the most delightful food in a cute setting.
A 10 out of 10 – wholeheartedly recommend.

- Try something new – there are so many options, it is worth experimenting to discover your new favourites.
