What makes Spud Life Newcastle special?
A little fact about me is that if it involves potatoes in any form, I am in! So I was SUPER SUPER SUPER excited to try this place!

I also think jacket potatoes are having a bit of a renaissance at the moment with a lot of places popping up serving this dish. But Spud Life is not your boring jackets!
These guys are turning the potatoes into a bit of a gourmet experience, and I am here for it (although I do absolutely adore a simple beans and cheese choice – some classics are classics for a reason!).

Why visit Spud Life
This exciting new spot in Newcastle is all about elevating the humble baked potato to something a little more special. And they have you covered for both the classic options, as well as some quite unique toppings.
- First of all, you start with a perfect base. The potatoes are cooked to perfection – fluffy on the inside with a crispy skin – it is all about that texture for me, can’t be beaten!

- You pick your filling – those fit into 4 categories: world tour, cheese and veggies, old school classics, heavyweights, and an extra mega spud, which is in a category of its own since it is a mix of many ingredients.
- You then choose your spread – normal or garlic butter
- Next, you pick your sauce – 2 sauces per spud. If you like spicy food, I’d recommend the chipotle and fresh fire, which I had with my Mac Daddy (hot and sooo good).
- And finally, choose your 2 free extras – I went with chopped chillies and coriander
- You can also get extra toppings from £1.

There are so many combinations you can create, and you can literally go every day and have something different – all while having a jacket potato!
I absolutely love the idea of being able to customise your dish and make it exactly how you like it.
What we ordered & what you should try
- Mac Daddy – Mac and cheese meets potato because who said carbs don’t mix? Topped with crispy onions, Cajun spice, grated cheese, and chipotle sauce for a spud that’s anything but basic. That is what the official description says, and all I can add to this is that this potato is EPIC. I loved it so much! The taste, texture – it was gorgeous.

- BBQ Banger – Pulled chicken drenched in smoky BBQ sauce and topped with crispy fried onions. They call it a BBQ party, and I couldn’t agree more. If you like BBQ flavours – you’re gonna looooooove this one.

Spud Life by name, but their desserts are a highlight too
So I think we are clear that these guys are seriously killing the baked potato game. But that’s not all they’re amazing at.
We also tried one of their desserts – the Matilda cake – and it was one of the nicest desserts you can imagine. We shared it, but I wish I had it all to myself. It was STUNNING! Super moreish, perfectly chocolatey, moist, and just delicious. I will absolutely be back to have more of this very soon.

Why we love this place:
- Customisable baked potatoes that allow you to craft your meal just the way you like it. Something light or fully loaded – there’s an option for you here. And it’s just so delicious!
- Fresh ingredients that bring a high quality touch to each dish. The fillings are fresh, and your spud is made to order.
- Quick service makes it a perfect stop for a meal on the go or for when you’re looking for a fast and filling lunch or dinner.
- They also do bubble tea and desserts – yum!!

Location:
Spud Life is located at 195 Chillingham Road, Heaton, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE6 5LH, with loads of street parking available, and just a short walk from the Chillingham Road Metro Station.

Tips for visiting:
- Opening hours – They are open daily from 12 – 9pm, so you can enjoy your baked potato fix at any time of the day. We arrived just before noon, as the shutters were going up, and within seconds (I am not kidding!) the place had a queue outside!! They are new, but they are already a hit, clearly! The wait isn’t long, though, as the freshly cooked spuds are ready, and the staff just add your toppings in a very speedy fashion!
- Experiment with toppings – Don’t be afraid to mix and match toppings! Spicy, cheesy, or healthy – you can create a baked potato that’s totally unique to your taste. You can also make it a light meal, or load it with moreish toppings.
- Try their desserts – The Matilda cake is literally unreal, but they do other desserts which I am yet to try. When I do – you’ll be the first ones to know!
