Best for: Gourmet burgers, homemade takeaway food, Burgers in Durham
Fitzpatrick’s Food started as a passion project during the pandemic, when Andrew, a former head chef, was hit with redundancy. With a dream of working for himself, Andrew and his partner Rhianne began creating a selection of tasty dishes, selling them to family and friends.Word spread quickly, and demand soared. They offered anything from afternoon tea to Sunday dinners, but Andrew noticed that it was the burgers that were the consistent best seller. After nearly 30 months of operating from home, where Andrew and Rhianne navigated living around bags of sesame seeds and serving thousands of dishes cooked using a standard home size cooker, 2023 saw the opening of their very first shop in Langley Moor, Durham.
With such a warm start up story, I was really looking forward to trying the food.

We had:
Garlic Steak Burger (steak burger, Swiss cheese, garlic butter, homemade tomato chilli jam, smoky bacon, shredded lettuce, garlic aioli, sweet pickled onions & crispy onions.) Super fresh, loaded with all the toppings and you could smell the delicious burger before it even arrived at our table. The combination of all those ingredients is insane – a perfect mix of umami, sweet, sour, spicy, with stunning texture of everything when you bite into it. Absolutely unreal.

Spicy Chipotle Burger (steak burger, tangy cheese, smoky bacon, jalapeños, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, smoky chipotle mayo, sweet pickled onions & crispy onions.) We joked it should be called the jaw breaker because of the size of this burger. It was absolutely HUGE, but equally delicious. The flavours were super well balanced and the little hit of heat was gorgeous. Not too spicy if you aren’t into hot food, but you can tell it has a bit of a kick.

BBQ Pulled Pork & Crispy Onions Loaded Fries. We upgraded those to Hand Cut Beef Dripping Chips and they were huge, and absolutely loaded with pulled pork and super crispy onions. The mix of flavour and texture made this dish a standout.

Parmesan & Truffle Mayo Seasoned Skin on Fries. Those were super crispy and perfectly covered in the homemade, super delicious truffle mayo. I loved them – it is definitely my kind of flavour and they nailed it.

Honey Chilli Halloumi Bites – another highlight for me, the halloumi was grilled perfectly and the honey chilli was gorgeous – not too sweet and coated the halloumi perfectly. I am not normally into savoury food that is sweet, but because of how subtle the sweetness was, it was a dreamy combo for me.

Crispy Chicken Goujons – those were huge and delicious. And the batter – I am not giving anything away on this one, you HAVE to try it. And if you do, I am excited to hear what you thought.

Beer Battered Onion Rings – the serving of those was enough for a main meal, I am not kidding. They are super generous with the portions, so if you like onion rings – give these a try. Super crispy and not at all greasy. Perfect for dipping in one of their unreal homemade dips. We sampled:
- Garlic Aioli (perfectly garlicky and rich)
- Honey Mustard Sauce (you can actually taste the mustard in it with a bit of honey sweetness)
- Smoky Chipotle Mayo (I finished the whole pot with my chips, little hints of spice and lovely texture)
- BBQ Sauce (one of the smokiest flavours I have ever tasted in a BBQ sauce, seriously good!)

The shakes!
We loved all the savoury food but if you’re in the mood for something sweet, they do amazing shakes which are creamy and delicious, and perfectly sweet (but not overpoweringly so) to end the meal.

Why we like this place:
We love the homemade, high-quality food at Fitzpatrick’s, which you can tell is a true labor of love. Andrew and Rhianne are lovely to talk to, and happy to tell you all about their story if you ask. It was great to find out about how they started, and made this place a success.
They really make everything from scratch here, including the sauces – and you can tell the difference. The same goes for the quality of ingredients; they have used the same butcher from day one, they are really committed to the quality of what they serve here.

We also appreciated the creative menu; there is something for everyone, and the halloumi veggie options is a hit too – if you are a halloumi fan (veggie or not)-try it here, they grill it to perfection.
It was a 40 minutes drive for us to get here, but absolutely worth it! If you’re Durham based, you probably already know about this place, but Fitzpatrick’s is worth a visit even if you’re having to travel a bit further to get here.
I hope one day they will come to Newcastle – I can just imagine them on a quayside market selling those unreal burgers!
