If you’re looking for authentic Vietnmese cuisine in Newcastle, let me tell you about the two sister venues which have been impressing us with their delicious food – Ngon Café and Ngon Bánh Mì.

Ngon Café Newcastle

Ngon Café is a super authentic restaurant serving some of the iconic Vietnamese street food options.

Our menu highlights at Ngon Café include:

  • vermicelli bowls (full of Vietnamese flavour, light but hearty at the same time)
  • wings in fish sauce (wings but not like you’ve had them before, one to try)
  • homemade iced tea (which is like Summer in a glass)

Everything was really tasty; the king prawns were especially delicious!

Ngon Bánh Mì

This place offers the flavours of Vietnam but I tried it with a homemade twist! I love nothing more than exploring new restaurants and cuisines and at Ngon Bánh Mìì I actually got to make one of the most popular Vietnamese street dishes – Bánh Mì.

I think the real star of the Bánh Mì is the bread which is just a revelation and I highly recommend giving it a try.

Baguettes were introduced to Vietnam by the French, but the Vietnamese made it their own and if you like bread (who doesn’t?) it’s one to try! It’s soft but crunchy and a little chewy but also airy; it’s an entirely new texture to what we’re used to in European bread. Really, really good!!

We tried a few fillings, with our highlights being:

  • Crispy deep-fried tofu
  • Tangy pickled vegetables
  • Fresh coriander
  • Rich beef stew
  • Curry chicken

All served inside the most delicious in-house made bread.

And what’s also cool, Ngon Bánh Mìalso do bubble tea! We went for:

  • matcha with pearls and coconut jelly (YUMMMMS)
  • brown sugar crème brûlée (which actually tasted like dessert)

I had the loveliest time making my Bánh Mì (and putting my Masterchef apron which I got for Christmas to a good use!)

They also do other classics like pho, rice bowls, and salads.
