Why Wyvestow’s is a must-visit spot for a date night in South Shields
We recently visited Wyvestow’s in South Shields, for a Friday evening date night, and it was honestly such a lovely experience.
We have been before for drinks, but this time we decided to have a meal here, and the place absolutely didn’t disappoint!

The restaurant is pretty special – elegant but not overly formal, with super chic decor that creates a warm, and very boujee atmosphere. Absolutely perfect for a night out.
A menu full of choices you’ll love
The menu was a bit of a surprise for me, because I didn’t expect so much choice! It is full of well thought out dishes, but it wasn’t at all difficult to choose what I wanted because a few items stood out to me immediately.

The best starters to share at Wyvestow’s
I started with the Classic Prawn Cocktail — baby prawns in a rich Marie Rose sauce with salad and a king prawn garnish. It was fresh, creamy, and sooooo beautifully presented. I have had many prawn cocktails in my life but this was – by far – the prettiest, most elegantly presented one ever. No Sundae cup in sight, ha! Simply stunning. And it was lovely that the taste was as beautiful as the presentation. 10/10!

We also went for the Caprese Salad, which was a bright and simple mix of buffalo mozzarella, vine ripened tomatoes, and fresh basil with a balsamic glaze. The mozzarella was so delicate and just fell apart, it was super fresh and delicious. Sometimes I feel it can be difficult to make a simple dish beautiful, but again – this starter was not only pretty, but also super tasty. We really enjoyed it.

Signature mains you have to try on your visit
When I say some dishes just stood out to me – this one was definitely it. I would go as far as to say it had my name on it. And the Bloody Mary Lobster Pasta was as gorgeous as it sounds! Prawns, white anchovies, olives, and a zesty Bloody Mary sauce, topped with half a lobster (yes, this place is this boujee!). It was super delicious and felt quite luxurious, as you can imagine half a lobster would! I was seriously impressed.

Our other choice was the 10oz Sirloin steak which I thought was perfectly cooked and flavoursome — everything you want in a quality steak.
You get a choice of a side – chips or veggies (although I am yet to dine with someone who opts for veggies as a steak side instead of chips); the chips were UNREAL. Even though this wasn’t my main, I ‘shared’ a large portion of the chips, they were so so good.

And I can’t not mention the sauce. They do quite a few choices, from the classic peppercorn, to some fun options like blue cheese, but we opted for the butter sauce made with seafood and chorizo. If I could only use one word to describe it- it would be DIVINE. Butter sauces are usually good but this one was GOOD good. I would absolutely recommend you try it when you visit this place (and frankly, I think you need to visit).

Desserts that are worth saving room for
And with such a great experience with starters and mains, we couldn’t say no to a dessert. We shared the Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake which came with 2 scoops of ice cream (I think the menu says a scoop of ice cream, but we were sharing it so I think we might have got a little bonus scoop – here’s a tip for you, order to share and get a little extra serving of ice cream). It was a lovely ending to a great meal. Chocolatey but not heavy.

What makes the atmosphere at Wyvestow’s so special
The staff were fantastic too – really attentive without being overbearing (I feel sometimes it is hard to get that happy medium – and they really get it right) and happy to answer any questions we had about the menu or drinksand make recommendations.
Combined with the lovely decor, it really is the place to be in South Shields. And I will happily travel from Gateshead again to dine here; the whole experience was absolutely faultless!
