Best for: Malatang, Asian food, Eldon Square dining, bubble tea
A unique dining experience
If you enjoy Asian food and want to feel like a chef creating an imaginative dish, this is a place to visit.
I love the whole Malatang concept – you get to build your own bowl, starting with a broth choice (or dry mix), protein, veggies, condiments, as well as your preferred heat level.

I am really happy to see these places pop up in town, and most recently, we visited Weis Malatang in Eldon Square as it has just opened within Cha Time – our go-to for bubble tea whenever we’re in Eldon Square.

Casual and convenient dining
It is a super casual setting, perfect for a quick lunch when out shopping or grabbing a bowl before heading back home – which is what we did. It was quite busy when we visited, so it is definitely a popular spot, despite only being open a few weeks.

What we had
We opted for the tom yum base (with differing heat levels; started with level 2, but it was quite mild, so we upped it to level 3, and it was perfect).
I always go for all the seafood, as it is my happy food, but you can customise it with any ingredient you like the look of.

They have a range of protein including meat and seafood, as well as vegetarian options, then there are vegetables, condiments, and of course, noodles.
I really appreciate that you can customise the heat level, depending on your mood. You can literally go every day and have a different Malatang each time, with the number of choices they offer. I absolutely love this concept!

Why we enjoyed our visit
- I really love the concept and the ability to select your ingredients, meaning you only get what you really like. I am all about seafood, so I was in my element selecting all of those for my dish.

- You can choose from a range of soup bases or a dry mix, which will be more like a stir-fry dish. So if soup isn’t your thing, there is still something for you.

- They also have set dishes, if you don’t feel like creating your own.
- Super convenient location when shopping in Eldon Square.
- You pay for what you eat, there is no service charge, and there are some really healthy choices, meaning you can eat well for a reasonable price.

- The ordering process is fun – you get a card and a marker, ticking everything you want in your dish. If you change your mind, it is easy to wipe off and start again.
- Since it is also a bubble tea place, you can grab one too! Cha Time bubble teas are one of our favourites!

Location
Weis Malatang is located within Eldon Square, at 42-44 Blackettbridge, Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 7XR.

Tips for Visiting
- Check your order card before handing it in – if it isn’t fully wiped, you may end up with some surprise ingredients (yes, that was me!). If you have dietary requirements, be extra careful.
- Prices are listed next to each item, so you can see the cost before ordering. Items are mostly around £2, but some are pricier. I did a quick mental calculation before ordering and removed a couple of items to keep costs lower.

- Set meals are available if you don’t want to choose your own ingredients. Options include vegetarian, pescatarian, and meat choices at set prices.
- Grab a bubble tea while you’re there! Our go tos are the matcha one and the brown sugar one – always delicious!
