If you’re after some delicious, French inspired crepes in the heart of Newcastle, Crepes Gourmet in Grainger Market is the place to try. Their menu offers a fantastic, in my opinion, mix of sweet and savoury crepes, each freshly made to order, with top quality, fresh ingredients. The menu has all of the classics we love like Nutella and Banana, and Lemon and Sugar, as well as some more unusual, and even savoury options that got me really excited – like a Spicy Popeye (you can guess what’s in that one!).
Crepes Gourmet’s mission is:
‘Life is too short not to eat something good every day’ and I couldn’t be on board with that any more!

What we had:
In the name of research, as always, we had to try both the sweet and savoury options, and it was a great shout.
Pistachio
This crepe was an absolute sweet treat. The Sicilian pistachio spread was rich and creamy, with the crushed pistachios adding some lovely scrunch. The tartness of the raspberry flakes balanced the richness of the pistachio, and the fresh strawberries were the perfect finishing touch (I think strawberries are such a natural fit for crepes, whatever other toppings you go for). It was simply delicious.

Romana
This was our savoury choice and it was GORGEOUS! The mozzarella and cheddar gave it a melty texture, while the tomato pesto brought a zesty kick (which I loved!) The combination of creamy, cheesy, and tangy flavours inside a warm, soft crepe was something else – I could definitely see myself coming back for this one time and time again. I usually go for a savoury crepe over a sweet one whenever I see one on the menu, and I found theirs to be very different from others I’ve had in the past (and by that, I mean it was more savoury, somehow). When I had a little chat with Marian, the owner (who is also the chef making the crepes), to tell him how much I enjoyed the food, he mentioned that they actually use different batter for the sweet and savoury crepes, which explains why it was so delicious.

Why we enjoyed our visit
• The friendly staff made the visit feel special, and their service was top-notch.
• Despite being busy, the crepes were served up quickly without sacrificing quality – they were fresh and hot. The presentation was also lovely.
• Watching the crepes being freshly made was such a fun experience – it’s always nice to see your food prepared right in front of you – I always find it to be a highlight, not to mention you can see how pristinely clean and tidy the place is.
• We learned that they use a separate batter for their sweet and savoury crepes, and it really made a difference. No idea how they do it but it works – I guess it is a secret that sets them apart.

If you enjoy crepes and pancakes, this place is really worth a try. The setting is lovely and staff couldn’t be any more helpful. There are so many flavours to try, both sweet and savoury, so even though it is all about the crepes, it would be impossible to get bored of the menu as there’s loads to try. Their coffee is also delicious.
They only started in 2022, but the hype about this place is real!
Location:
Crepes Gourmet is located at Alley 4, 173-175 Grainger Market, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 5QQ. The nearest metro station is Monument, just a short walk away. We usually park in the Dean Street multi-storey and enjoy a little walk to the market – it definitely helps us work up an appetite before all the delicious crepes and treats.

Tips for visiting:
- Be mindful of their opening times: Tuesday–Saturday: 9 am–5:30 pm
- Don’t miss out on trying both their sweet and savoury crepes. They’re both incredible, but the flavours are distinct, so you’re in for a real treat whether you have a sweet tooth, or prefer savoury food. Especially if you’re like us two – both like entirely different flavour profiles.
- They also do lovely coffee, so even if you don’t fancy food, you can pop in and grab a coffee to take away, or to sit in in their lovely seating area (the wall art and greenery really makes this place feel nice and peaceful, even though you are right in the middle of a busy market).
- There is something for everyone with veggie, vegan and gluten free options available
- If you don’t normally go to the Grainger Market, you can catch them at local festivals and markets, like Seaham Food Festival, Quayside Market, Heaton Festival, Sound Wave Festival, Clubland by the Sea in Hartlepool, and Jesmond Food Market.
