My Bombay Bistro, Tavistock Place, Sunderland SR1 1PB
We were lucky to attend the preview night at My Bombay Bistro – a new Indian restaurant in Sunderland. From the moment we stepped in, it was clear that this place was something that’s been created with a lot of love. The decor is the first thing you notice and it blends modern touches with traditional Indian charm. Neon signs, cosy corners, gin bar, wood decor fireplace – the owners, and uncle and nephew duo, Faz and Naz clearly had a vision for an aesthetic place and I adore the tuk-tuk taking the centre stage as you walk in.

A five course menu to show off what My Bombay Bistro is all about
The evening started with a selection of popadoms and pickles (which is a must when dining at an Indian restaurant, right?) The chilli sauce, with its lovely, subtle but noticeable kick, stood out as my favourite, while the popadoms themselves were thin, light, and perfectly crispy—a great way to begin the meal.

Next up was the Chicken Tikka, which arrived as a generous portion for a starter. The chicken was well-cooked and packed with flavour, setting a high standard for the courses that followed.
I opted for the Kaju Prawns as a starter and I have to say – this was the dish of the night for me! Partially because I love seafood, and partially because the dish was faultless. The prawns were perfectly cooked, served very hot (temperature wise), and encased in a light batter that didn’t feel heavy at all. I often find myself removing the batter from fried foods (I know, it’s considered a sin to some, sorry!), but not this time—it was just right and there wasn’t too much of it. If, like me, you are a seafood lover – this dish will not disappoint.

For the mains, we sampled both the Madras and the Masala. The Madras had a delicate spice level, making it great for dipping bread without overpowering the palate. The Masala was sweet and rich, exactly as you’d expect from this classic dish. Paired with fluffy Pilau Rice, freshly made thick-cut chips, and a Garlic Nan that was perfectly mild, it was a satisfying and delicious combination. I usually love naan, and this one didn’t disappoint—it was soft, garlicky, and enhanced the flavours of the curry without stealing the spotlight. We shared one, but when we go back, I will definitely be getting one each as it was really delicious.

Why You Should Visit
The service at My Bombay Bistro was faultless—friendly and attentive. Plus, the little details like real napkins and quality crockery made the meal feel that much more special. It is a small thing but I think it definitely adds to the overall experience.
If you’re considering a visit, now’s the time, as they’ve got some fantastic deals during their first month of opening (just this week there is 50% off food which is amazing!).
I can’t wait to explore their full menu soon, including their cocktail as the menu looks pretty good!
