Cosy charm and delicious pies at one of Newcastle’s oldest pubs – The Redhouse

Known for its exceptional pies and cosy, quirky interiors, we found The Redhouse to fully live up to its reputation.
From the moment you step through the door, the unique charm of this place is very obvious. The decor is delightfully rustic, which makes for a lovely, cosy feel—exactly what you’d expect from a place that does something as homely and wholesome as pies!

Artisan bakery pies
So, let’s talk about the pies—because they are the real stars here.
The menu is quite extensive and even though it’s all about the pies, there really is a lot of choice. After some deliberation, I went for the vegan mince pie with a side of half chips and half cheesy mash, peppercorn sauce, and peas. And it was divine! The crust was perfectly flaky, the filling rich and flavourful—truly the best pie I’ve had in a long, long time.

The Redhouse has something to satisfy every taste. The menu is extensive and there are so many options to choose from, including more traditional steak or chicken with a North East touch (read: Brown Ale), as well as vegetarian and vegan options, plus seasonal flavours that change regularly. They are all freshly made by one of Newcastle’s most loved artisan bakeries – Pink Lane Bakery, and are beautifully complemented by a range of add-ons.

Once you select your pie, you then pick your potatoes (there are 7 versions to choose from, including mash, chips, roast potatoes, and wey aye fries), add peas from a choice of 4, and finally one of 5 sauces, or liquors as they are referred to here. You can literally have a very different meal every time you go.

There were four of us out and we each had an entirely different plate—even though we all had pie and potatoes!

The Redhouse really exceeded all my expectations with its cosy ambiance, quirky decor, and, most importantly, its incredible food. Whether you’re a local or visiting Newcastle, this is one dining experience you won’t want to miss. Trust me, you’ll find yourself planning your next visit before you’ve even finished your meal.

And of course, I can’t not mention its location. Right in the centre of Newcastle’s bustling Quayside, The Redhouse’s location is not only picturesque but also super accessible, just a short walk from Central Station. Its central location also puts you within easy reach of Newcastle’s key attractions, offering a perfect blend of convenience and charm. Here’s how you can get there:

• Try the pies: Their pies are the star of the menu, with plenty of fillings to choose from. You can mix and match your pie with different types of mash, peas, and gravy, and staff offer helpful recommendations if you can’t make up your mind
• Pair with an ale: Redhouse has a great selection of local ales too that complement the rustic pies so well
• Outdoor seating: If the weather’s nice, take advantage of their outdoor seating area with a view of the river for a scenic meal.
• Match days: Redhouse opens early on match days, making it a perfect spot to gather with friends for a pre-game drink
• Dog-friendly: They’re dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your fur babies along.
