Everything you need to know about Abajo
Abajo is the newest sports bar in Newcastle and we have been visiting since it opened – read my last review here.

We enjoy the city sports bar chic vibe here, and have tried some of their dishes – both sports bar favourites, as well as tapas.
Our menu highlights would be:
- Blackened Cajun burger
- Gambas pil pil
- Patatas bravas
- Mac & cheese bites
- Garlic bread
Sunday lunch at Abajo
Most recently, they introduced a Sunday lunch menu so of course we had to try it!
And it was everything you’d want from a comforting, home cooked meal.

To start, we had the chicken liver pâté, which was smooth and rich, and a classic prawn cocktail – fresh and very tasty.

For mains I went for the vegetarian roast, while we also ordered the lamb, which was so tender it was falling off the bone. Both came with generous portions of al dente veggies, crispy roasties, and huge Yorkshires. I was absolutely stuffed – the portions are huge!

But never too full for a dessert! We went for a chocolate brownie which came with salted caramel ice cream – it was gooey and hot, just delish. We also had the sticky toffee pudding which ismade in house with real dates – rich, sticky, and moreish.

Everything was freshly made, hearty, and full of flavour. If you’re after a proper homely lunch, Abajo is well worth a visit.

Current deals at Abajo
They’re also running some brilliant midweek offers like 30% off food Tuesday to Friday and 2 for 1 cocktails.
This independent spot is serving up serious comfort food – we’re already planning another visit to try their new tapas menu!

Location
Abajo is located at 42-50 Basement Grey Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 6AE. It’s just a 5-minute walk from Monument Metro Station, with Dean Street Car Park just at the bottom of the street (it is also free after 7pm which we always take advantage of)

Tips for visiting
- Sunday lunch is available every week, and you can opt for 1, 2 or 3 courses.
- The entrance on Grey Street is easy to miss, so keep an eye out.
- For live sports events, especially on match days, it’s worth booking a table, as the place gets packed.
- They offer table service, so you don’t have to worry about bar queues in half time.
- You don’t need to be a sports fan to enjoy this place, the atmosphere is fun and the food is delicious
