What to expect at Chakh Dhoom, Newcastle

We have been visiting Chakh Dhoom since it opened (you can read my last review here) and we are huge fans. The food is always stunning, and they really elevate some of the street food dishes we’re used to, to another level.

Whether it is classics like poppadoms and dipsPunjabi samosa chaatauthentic vegetable Manchurian, or their own creations like Sharmaji’s Dunali Seekh Kebab (two-layered kebab), the beetroot kalongi naan, or super moreish prawn tawa masala, we always enjoy our dining experience here.

The place is beautifully decorated in a classic style, while hinting at the street food character of some of the dishes, with some really interesting art pieces and posters. Wherever you sit, there is something interesting to look at.

The Ultimate Indian Sunday roast at Chakh Dhoom

We always have a great experience when we visit, and so it’s no surprise that when they announced their new Ultimate Indian Sunday Roast – we had to come and try it!

And – WOW – what an absolutely incredible feast it was!

What’s included in Chakh Dhoom’s Sunday roast?

You get a choice of one or two courses and, as they say on the menu, you wouldn’t need a third course. And I couldn’t agree more – we went for 2 and we were stuffed!

For the roast, there is choice of:

  • 24 hours marinated lamb shank with bone marrow gravy
  • Smoked tandoori chicken supreme with bone marrow gravy
  • Tandoori coastal spiced catch of the day (mostly monkfish) with coastal coconut gravy
  • Vegan malai broccoli with tadka vegan masala gravy

I was so happy to see a fish option on a Sunday lunch menu because it is not very often you get that. So naturally I opted for that. We also went for the chicken.

Whichever option you go for, each comes with:

  • Poppadoms with mango chutney (you’ll be surprised how well they go with a roast!)
  • Gunpowder vegetables (perfectly cooked)
  • Tandoori roast masala potatoes (loved the spice on these)
  • Bihari potato mash (smoothest mash with a lovely flavour)
  • Onion bhajis (yes, you will enjoy them with your Sunday lunch)
  • Spiced potato and lentil stuffed pooris (my most favourite element, I could eat 3 of these, super moreish and so delicious, most perfect texture too!)

Desserts and drinks at Chakh Dhoom

For the dessert, we opted for:

  • Rose and cardamom cheesecake (not only does it look beautiful, it also tastes lovely too; I also really liked the texture of it; it is not your typical cheesecake but it is delicious)

  • Sticky toffee pudding (a classic, and if you enjoy STP, you will love this one here)

We also had some chai – which was a beautiful mix of spices that hit you at the very first sip. The chefs make it from scratch which explains why it tastes sooo delicious, and is so potent. And I loved how they serve it fresh at the table – a little bit of theatre at the end of your meal.

And as always, I had to get their Indian spiced lemonade, which is such a unique, and addictive flavour. I would definitely recommend trying this when you visit. It is super unusual and you just want to keep drinking it.

Why Chakh Dhoom’s Sunday roast is a must-try

We absolutely loved the menu and the dishes.

  • Classic British comfort meets Indian spice. The idea of an Indian take on a traditional Sunday roast is great – you get the wholesome roast of choice, but it is elevated by the Indian spices.
  • Quality ingredients cooked to perfection. All ingredients are cooked perfectly – beautifully al dente veggies, super smooth mash, and beautiful roast.
  • A unique dining experience you won’t forget. It is a brave take on the classic roast – something so iconic that people are so used to just the way it is, and has always been – but I think the combination of the hearty, wholesome roast with the bold Indian spices is an incredible combination.

So much so, we hardly spoke to each other from the moment the food arrived at our table, until we polished it all off – it is just sooooo good!

They call it The Ultimate Indian Sunday Roast and I think it is an appropriate description. If you enjoy Sunday roast, and if you enjoy Indian flavours, this really will be an ultimate dining experience for you. Stunning.

Location

Chakh Dhoom is located at 127 Osborne Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE2 2TB, and just a 5-minute walk from West Jesmond Metro Station. There is also on-street parking available at the front (but do check the permit times as it is not always free).

Tips for visiting

  • Gift vouchers are available if you would like to surprise someone with the gift of gorgeous food.
  • Chakh Dhoom is an Indian street food carnival, so be prepared to try new dishes, and see your favourites elevated to a fine dining level.
  • They often have special events and deals on, for example their Valentine’s Day menu which I am still thinking about now, 2 months on!
  • Try their drinks; the homemade mocktails in particular are my go-to – so so delish and the taste is super inventive.
  • Their Sunday lunch is very reasonably priced, especially for the size of the servings you get. You can opt for 1 course for £24.95, or 2 courses for £29.95.
  • Gravy and breads get topped up if you ask, which is a lovely touch.
  • They often have live music which creates a lovely atmosphere. On Sunday we listened to a keyboard player in the background, but they had other artists on previous visits which is always a nice touch.
