Why DoughDaze is a must visit New York style pizzeria in Newcastle

Trying new pizza places is one of my favourite things to do and we’re lucky to have some amazing spots serving all kinds of pizza in town. I don’t think there is a type of pizza I don’t like, but an NY style pizza is definitely one of my faves!

This is why I was super excited to try Dough Daze! It is a New York-style pizzeria with a unique twist. The owners—who are passionate foodies—have created a pizza spot that brings together a great pizza with a fun 90s vibe.

From the music to the memorabilia, everything about Dough Daze feels like a nostalgic trip back to the 90s. The decor is a throwback to classic NYC pizza houses, with smart red and white colours, black and white chequered flooring, and vinyl seating that completes the retro atmosphere. It is a nostalgic nod to the 90s, but it doesn’t feel like a pastiche – it is fun and I loved it!

What to order at Dough Daze: a guide to their best menu items

Dough Daze have just won the best independent pizzeria by Luxe Life, and there’s been quite a bit of hype around this place recently, so I knew the pizzas would be good. The difficult bit was choosing what to have.

They have a great menu full of classics as well as some creative options; you can get a 12” pizza, a slice of their 20” pizza, or a whole 20” pizza.

We opted for their famous 20” and gone half and half:

  • Pepperoni with honey drizzle – The bestseller and I can totally see why.  The combination of spicy pepperoni and sweet honey is just something else. It is a classic but levelled up – definitely a must try.

  • Goats cheese with red onion jam – A creative topping combo that’s both sweet and savoury. I usually stay away from sweet savoury foods (I like savoury things to be savoury) but I really like goat’s cheese on pizza and this one was STUNNING. It was not too sweet, but the onion jam and balsamic added a very subtle sweetness to this pizza. It went beautifully with the goat’s cheese! And since we went for 20” I obviously didn’t finish it all on the night – I had a couple of slices for my breakfast the next day and honestly they tasted just as good the next day (which for me is an indicator of a great pizza – it can’t just be me, right?)

What I also really love about their pizzas is the dough; it is unmistakably NY inspired and it holds well when you pick up a slice making it easy to eat. It just makes a great pizza even better. It really is the small things that can make a huge difference!

We also went for some sides.

  • Mac and cheese. This comesin three flavours: regular, with pepperoni, and with buffalo chicken—I went for the regular one and I was so happy with my choice. It came covered in the most delicious herb crumb on top, it was soft, hot, gooey, and had that satisfying cheese pull that I am addicted to. It was beautiful and so, so flavoursome.

  • Dough balls: These are baked to perfection, and you can top them with a range of toppings, and I can’t tell you how lovely these were! I never had dough balls fully covered in cheese and toppings and I think I might have found my new go to side. Because of all the goodness on top, they were super soft while still having that delightful chew when you bit into them. What made these stand out for me was that they were not dry at all, which can sometimes be a thing with dough balls. I loved them and when I come back, this will be my repeat order. Definitely a must-try.

  • We also tried one of their Milkshakes – we went with a strawberry one and it was super fruity and not too heavy. I am not typically a milkshake person but I really enjoyed it here, worth every calorie, and I’d happily order it again.

Why we love this place

  • The 90s retro vibe: The fun decor and memorabilia bring a nostalgic energy and I am here for it.
  • Traditional New York-style pizza: Their pizzas are perfectly built—not too thin, not too thick, and made with in house dough and fresh ingredients. And most importantly – they are just DELICIOUS! If you’ve been to NY and want to get that truly authentic NY pizza in Newcastle – this place is a must try.
  • Creative sides: The mac and cheese and dough balls are divine here! They are classics, but somehow they manage to level them up here!
  • Great value; our whole order came to £36 which for 20” pizza, 2 sides, a dip, and 2 drinks is really good. But you can also go for 12” or a pizza slice if you’re not that hungry, which is even more affordable.

Location

Dough Daze is located at 27 Ridley Place, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE1 8JN just off Northumberland Street which is super convenient if you’re shopping in town. Monument and Haymarket metro stations are both just nearby. We park in Eldon Square car park which is literally a 5 minute walk from the place.

Tips for Visiting
  • Opening hours: 12pm – 8pm every day.
  • We went at 6pm and the place was FULL!! But if that happens to you don’t be put off – most people order and take their food to go so the queue goes down really quickly. We didn’t wait longer than 5 mins to get a free table. And the food arrived quickly too so absolutely worth popping in, even if it looks super busy.
  • Dine in or take away: You can either enjoy your meal in the fun, retro restaurant or take your pizza to go. I loved the vibe so we dined in.
  • Meal deals: check out their deals to save yourself some money.
