A very unique concept

Malatang is a popular Chinese dish known for its flavourful broth and customisable nature. I absolutely love the concept – you grab a bowl and fill it with as much or as little delicious, fresh ingredients from the fridges, add noodles of your choice, select the broth you like, and the chefs cook it fresh for you. The price depends on the weight, so you can make it a light meal or a feast – entirely up to you. You are the chef here! Well, almost… you choose everything you want, and the actual chefs cook it fresh for you, which is a perfect set up!

Our delicious choices

We have been a couple of times now, and it’s always been a great experience.

First time I opted for Asian veggies, different types of mushroom and seafood (they were all cooked to perfection) with the signature Malatang broth. It is a spicy broth but you can have it mild if you prefer. I also added almost all of the condiments (coriander, chillies, spring onions, crushed peanuts, and hot chilli oils…) – the dish was DELICIOUS! So much so I had to get every little drop from the bowl!

Our other choice was the meats, mushrooms and veggies with Tom Yum sauce, which was also stunning. The depth of flavour in their broths is unmatched!

As soon as we left, we were already talking about the next time we’ll go because the food was absolutely stunning! And true to our word, we went back again, this time trying slightly different options, but we enjoyed them equally as much.

We went with 2 of their new base options; curry laksa broth and peanut butter dry mix. The laksa broth was mild which is a great base if you want to add own condiments. It was very smooth and super flavourful. It went perfectly with all the seafood I chose.

The dry mix was something else – it was more like a stir fry than a soup; it was one of the most peanutty flavour ever – perfectly moreish and so delicious. It went perfectly with the udon noodles we opted for; it was a feast in a bowl!

Sides and desserts at Nudo Malatang

Besides the customisable bowls, you can also get a selection of small plates from the menu, as well as desserts, but we were fully satisfied after our meals so skipped those.

The options are endless, the fridges are full with a huge choice of ingredients (some of them I have never actually tasted before) so you can really experiment with new ingredients, or go with your favourites.

I don’t think you can go wrong with this place, since you’re choosing everything yourself, you know you will like it.

With cute decor and friendly staff, this really is a place to try.

Location

Nudo Malatang is located at 54-56 Low Friar Street, NE1 5UE. The nearest metro station is Monument Metro Station; there is also street parking nearby, and Multi-Storey Car Park within a short walk.

Tips for visiting:
  • Try it! It is a one of a kind dining experience, and the staff are super helpful. They will ask you if you’ve been before, and can explain exactly how it works and what to do when you put your dish together. It is a delicious and super fun experience! I absolutely LOVE this place and the whole vibe.
  • Customise it: Make sure to experiment with the different ingredients and condiments to find your perfect combination.
  • Be mindful that you pay per gram, so the heavier the bowl, the more it’ll cost. Ours came to around £20 per person during our first visit (we went for lunchtime and had a lighter meal); and around £30 during our second visit (as it was our evening meal, we really loaded the bowls his time).
  • The opening hours are: Tuesday – Sunday: 12pm – 3pm & 5pm – 9pm
  • Spice level: The Malatang broth can be quite spicy, so start mild if you’re unsure and adjust with condiments. The staff are fantastic at explaining the spice levels for each broth so if you’re unsure – do ask.
  • Balance your bowl: Mix proteins, veggies, and noodles for a well-rounded meal. Leafy greens and mushrooms soak up the broth beautifully!
  • Try something new: The fridge is stocked with unique ingredients—be adventurous and sample something unfamiliar.
