If you love a proper burger, this place needs to be on your list. They do things differently here, skipping the smash burger trend in favour of hand-rolled patties cooked to PERFECTION. And it isn’t just classic beef I am talking about; chicken and meatfree options are also worth the hype here!

We visited on a Thursday evening for a little treat to kick start the weekend and I can confirm that all the hype about this place is well earned.
The menu
First thing I really loved about this place is the menu; it is made for anybody as indecisive as me – here’s why. It fits everything on one page, but you will find everything you may fancy there, without overanalysing things for too long. It took me 60 seconds to decide what to have – great!
We went for:
• Bacon Jalapeno Double
Double beef, American cheese, diced onions, smoked streaky bacon, fresh jalapenos, house sauce, seeded bun. Properly stacked (have you seen how gorgeous it looks?!), packed with all of the fresh ingredients, and a nice hit of heat from the jalapenos (I also appreciate how nicely presented they were – not just thrown in; it is the small things, right?). You can also really taste the quality of the ingredients they use. It was super, SUPER flavourful. The house sauce tied everything together perfectly. It is seriously good (so much so we had asked for a separate pot of this sauce to dip our fries in, delish)

• Moving Mountains Burger
I was so excited to see this on the menu as only elite places serve this veggie option – if you are a vegetarian, flexitarian, or just enjoy meat free options, you will probably know what I am talking about! It’s just the best of the best in veggie world. But Pattymelts make it even better with their gorgeous fillings inside the softest bun; smoked cheddar, shreddice (just lush! Best form of lettuce you can eat in my opinion, showing that everything here is done with such attention to detail), diced onions, and house sauce. A solid veggie burger option with great texture and plenty of flavour, which really shows they aren’t just about the classic options, but go the extra mile to make the veggie menu super exciting too.

• Seasoned Fries
Crispy fries which we loved as you can really tell they are proper potatoes. Their ‘chicken seasoning’ recommended by the staff was a great shout – it totally elevated the already delicious fries to another level. Fries are so simple and can easily be omitted as a little side but these guys make them stand out on their own. Really, really gorgeous side to their stunning burgers.

• Hot Fried Chicken
Japanese-style fried chicken topped with green onions, house pickles, Korean buffalo mayo, Sichuan oil, and togarashi. Juicy, crunchy, and packed with layers of heat and spice. It is fried chicken but not quite as you know it – definitely worth a try if you visit.
• House Sauce
Worth a mention on its own – it was creamy, tangy, and went well with literally everything on the menu.

• Burnt Basque Cheesecake
I said it a million times – I am not normally a cheesecake person – but, second time this week I’ve been proven that maybe I need to rethink this.
I think baked cheesecake is normally better than cold cheesecake anyway, so I did expect this to be a ‘ok’ but I will happily admit it was waaaaaay better than I expected. Perfectly rich, creamy, a little tangy (best part), and slightly caramelised on top, it was a great way to finish the meal. If you visit – make sure you get a slice. We shared one and it was a perfect amount of sweetness for the end of the burger feast, really, really lovely.

Why we enjoyed our visit & plan to go back
• The place is super chilled; the patties are served out of a hatch inside a courtyard of Billy Bootleggers, which is just a perfect place to pop in for some great quality food. Unpretentious and simple as a venue, but the taste of the food makes them stand out. Exactly what you want in a burger place, in my opinion.
• Hand-Rolled Patties – Not smashed! You can really taste the quality beef. As much as smash burgers are a fantastic trend that we really welcome in the North East (I like to see all the burger places upping their game), I really appreciate that Pattymelts are standing out and doing things differently. Viral things are fine, but I will always respect a place that does their own thing, especially when they do it SO WELL!

• Top-Notch Ingredients – You can tell everything is made with care, from the freshly cut fries to the homemade bread and dill pickles.
My only regret – only once we had ordered I realised that both of our mains were served in a burger bun, we didn’t opt for any burgers that are served inside their ICONIC bread which they make here. I was gutted that I missed out on this but, to be fair, the burgers were unreal so no bad choices were made! And it just gives us a reason to go back so I guess things happen for a reason…
Location
Pattymelts are located in the heart of Ouseburn: Arch 2, Stepney Bank, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 2NP. It can be easy to miss (did we drive past it first and missed it – yes, we did) as their hatch is tucked away inside Billy Bootleggers courtyard, so bear this in mind when you go.
There is a lot of parking available around the building so it’s super accessible.

Tips for Visiting
• Opening Hours are:
Wednesday – Thursday: 4-9pm
Friday: 1-8pm
Saturday: 1-8pm
Sunday: 1-6pm
• You can have your burger and patties to go, but if you fancy sitting in, the courtyard is quite roomy and has some heaters for chilly weather. We had our food inside Billy Bootleggers which you can also use. That’s also where you’d get your drinks from too.
• If you like your best meal of the day to be served first thing in the morning, they do breakfast, and the menu looks unreal! It is only available on Uber Eats (Fri-Sun, 9-12) and is DEFINITELY on our list to try soon.
Best for: burgers Newcastle, burgers Ouseburn, Ouseburn dining, takeaway
