If you’re after authentic Greek street foodAcropolis Street Food is the place to go. You don’t need me to tell you how amazing they are – anyone who’s tried their food knows they’re top-notch when it comes to Greek street food in the North East.

Creative menu

Their main menu is full of traditional Greek street food dishes which we love, but what I like about them the most is their creative take on their food.

There’s always something new going on at Acropolis. Very recently, they teamed up with a local bakery to create the Geordie Gyros – yes, you read that right! They took their classic gyros (you can get chicken or halloumi) and wrapped it all up in a stottie, North East style. It was seriously good.

And right now, they’ve got an offer on wraps (£8.95), so of course, I popped into Acropolis in Metrocentre for a quick treat while shopping (because it’s just so convenient).

We went for

  • Chicken Gyros – It’s a classic and definitely one of their signature dishes. Ryan always adds extra halloumi (so good!). Their sauces are unmatched in my opinion.
  • Halloumi Gyros – There’s always so much halloumi in this one. It’s my favourite, and honestly, it tastes like being back in Greece! The portions are also huge so it is pretty difficult to finish the whole thing in one sitting (although we give it our best try!)

  • Halloumi Bites – they’re crispy and addictive, and you can’t say no when they’re on offer (currently £4.95)! Even with the halloumi in our wraps, we finished the whole portion. The dipping sauce is what makes them extra special – it is unreal in my opinion.

And you can always customise your Gyros if you want extra ingredients – so if you’re REALLY hungry, that’s a great option.

And of course, we HAD TO try their Dubai cheesecake. Even though I’m not usually a cheesecake person, this one blew me away. It’s got a pistachio baklava base that I’ve never had before, and it was absolutely stunning. If you’re a fan of cheesecake or baklava, don’t miss this! It’s a limited-time thing, so hurry up before it’s gone! I am definitely going back while this is still on the menu because it was the best cheesecake I have ever had.

What we love about Acropolis

  • The staff are always so lovely, most recently we visited the Metrocentre restaurant and had a fantastic experience. The staff recommendations are always spot on too – even though we have our favourites, we usually get something based on the staff recommendations and it has always been a great shout.
  • There are so many locations, if you’re after delish Greek street food – they’re never too far away
  • Portions are great and we always find that their Gyros is LOADED with all the good stuff
  • They always have veggie options available which is a huge plus for me
  • I adore how they mix up the menu and always bring out new items; and they’re usually super creative… and delish too!

Tips for Visiting

  • Check out their new, creative dishes – they love to mix things up and are super creative with their takes on traditional Greek street food
  • Don’t sleep on the Dubai cheesecake. It is out of this world (and I say it as a person who doesn’t normally like cheesecake. So, so good.)
  • With so many locations, there is one near you – so you don’t have to travel far.
  • Many of their locations are both sit in and takeaway, so great whether you’re in a mood to just grab and go, or sit in and enjoy a date or catch up with a mate
  • They often have offers on (just like now with their wraps and halloumi bites) so there is usually a deal to be had
